As the number of managed environments increased, a technology services provider began to feel the strain of monitoring more than 20 mission-critical Sybase ASE databases. Although Datadog was already central to its broader observability strategy, Sybase monitoring still relied on fragmented methods that made troubleshooting slower and limited proactive oversight.
Â
The team needed a practical way to bring Sybase fully into Datadog without adding new agents to database servers or complicating existing operational safeguards. Just as importantly, the solution had to support different client requirements while maintaining reliability and control.
In this case study, we explore how Crest Data implemented a purpose-built Datadog integration for Sybase ASE, bringing performance data, audit activity, and error logs together in one place. The outcome was simpler operations, clearer visibility across environments, and a monitoring approach that could scale confidently alongside client growth.
The customer is a technology services provider responsible for managing enterprise database environments for multiple clients. Supporting business-critical applications across industries, the organization plays a key role in maintaining database performance, availability, and compliance, where operational reliability is essential.
With more than 20 Sybase ASE databases under management, the team operates within strict security and governance standards while continuously evolving its monitoring capabilities to meet growing client demands.
As the customer’s database footprint grew, existing monitoring approaches became increasingly difficult to scale and maintain.
Key challenges included:
These challenges made it difficult to proactively monitor database health, respond quickly to incidents, and scale observability as client demand increased.
Crest Data approached the engagement with a clear goal: bring Sybase ASE fully into the customer’s existing Datadog ecosystem without adding complexity to the database layer. Instead of introducing new agents or side tools, the team implemented Crest Data’s Datadog Marketplace integration for Sybase ASE, designed specifically for enterprise environments where operational control and security standards cannot be compromised.
The focus was not just on collecting metrics, but on delivering usable visibility. The integration established a consistent monitoring framework across all Sybase environments, supported by ready-to-use dashboards and alert templates aligned to real-world database operations.
The first priority was performance clarity. The integration brought together critical Sybase performance indicators into structured, easy-to-navigate dashboards. Rather than forcing teams to piece together information from multiple sources, database health could now be assessed in one place.
Teams gained insight into resource consumption, workload behavior, connection trends, transaction activity, locking patterns, disk performance, and database growth. This made it easier to distinguish between a temporary workload spike and a deeper performance bottleneck. With standardized views across all databases, troubleshooting became faster and more consistent, regardless of the client environment involved.
Dashboards alone are not enough without intelligent alerting. To support proactive operations, Crest Data introduced a library of predefined monitor templates tailored to common Sybase risk scenarios.
These included threshold-based alerts for CPU, memory, I/O, and connection pressure, along with forecast-driven monitors that highlight trends before they turn into outages. Instead of reacting after service degradation occurs, teams could step in early to address capacity constraints, investigate locking contention, or prevent resource exhaustion.
Importantly, alerts could be refined to reflect individual client SLAs and operational priorities, giving the organization both standardization and flexibility.
Beyond performance, the integration of the centralized database audit events and error logs directly within Datadog. Security-relevant activities and operational errors were no longer isolated from performance data.
By bringing metrics, audit records, and error logs together, investigations became more contextual. A spike in resource usage could be correlated with a specific event. An application issue could be traced alongside database errors. This unified view reduced back-and-forth analysis and improved confidence during incident response.
By consolidating performance monitoring, alerting, audit tracking, and error visibility into a single Datadog-native experience, Crest Data helped the customer establish a standardized and scalable monitoring model for all Sybase ASE databases without increasing operational overhead.
The Datadog-based Sybase observability solution delivered clear operational benefits.
